Well, I haven't posted in quite some time and I was thinking I should do an update. I haven't been doing much fitness over the last month. :(
I started a 6 week challenge on my Wii Active More Workouts game, which I had still unwrapped at my house. I started it a few weeks ago and then promptly was sick for a week. :( Nothing bad just not feeling well.... So I started again and then my husband was sick and I wasn't able to use the tv for my workouts.. :(
I was worried when I started that the game would try to make me do activities that I cannot do due to my diastasis recti. I was pleasantly surprised that I am able to unclick and not do the crunches and abdominal exercises that they have scheduled. Whew!
I am behind on my workouts. I believe I have missed 4 workouts, which equals one week of workouts. The game is set up for 4 workout days per week. I think I can catch up a bit this week. Cross my fingers.
Taking action to improve 30 days at a time. I am just one woman trying to improve myself 30 days at a time.

Final PT Visit and What I learned from my PT sessions
Well, the last few weeks, I had a class on how to properly lift, sleep, carry, etc for a healthy back or if you have acute back pain. That was kind of interesting. I didn't learn too much. I already learned how to do a "log roll" to get in and out of bed for less stress on the back. I did figure out that I need to work on my squats as I was not adept at squatting properly by thinking about sitting in a chair. Something to work on for the future.
My last visit with my PT was helpful and she gave me exercises that I really needed to concentrate on to make sure I was doing them correctly. She instructed me to just keep working on it in different combinations to keep challenging myself and improve.
Things I learned from going to Physical Therapy:
1) I need to stretch. I learned that other muscles and perhaps scar tissue in my torso/leg area might be inhibiting my abdominal muscles from completely closing.
2) I need to use the transverse abdominals and pelvic floor all the time. If I want to improve my abdominals I need to think about them all the time. Lifting the baby, bending to pick up things. washing the dishes or just lying down. You use your abdominals all the time, and if they are not strong enough either from a diastasis recti or other condition, your back will suffer. You need to retrain and strengthen your abdominals to remember how to work properly.
3) I need regular visits so I actually do my physical therapy prescribed. It really motivated to improve because I knew I was going to see my PT every week. I think it really helped to push me so that I saw improvement sooner rather than later.
4) I need to be more proactive in my health if I want to get better. It took me 15 months postpartum before I saw a PT. I should not have waited so long. My OB was not curious about what conditions I had after I had the baby. I had to figure it out, unfortunately. That won't be happening again.
My PT experience was good and if you have a condition that isn't going away like I did, I really suggest you see a professional. The sooner the better.

September 17: Diastasis Recti Update
Well, it has been a rough week. My neck went into a spasm and it hurt to laugh, cough, hold my LO etc. Then I felt better and I did some gardening and it was worse. Oh well.
I am still feeling the effects of the neck spasm, but it is so much better than it was a few days ago. Thankfully!
I had another physical therapy appointment for my Diastasis Recti and it was interesting for sure. More exercises to do and more learning about my bodily misalignments.
I don't know if it is my imagination, but I think my stomach might actually be getting smaller. Already? My husband agrees. I haven't seen too much change in my actual measurement, but my husband thinks that people have a tendency to suck it in when being measured. I am sure he is right. My clothes are fitting differently, so I suppose I'll use that as my confirmation. The change is subtle, but noticeable to me!

Review of Jillian Michael's Ripped in 30
This review is very overdue... Sorry for the delayed post.
Jillian Michael's Ripped in 30 is a workout DVD with 4 complete workouts. The workouts are 4 different levels which progress in level of difficulty. The workouts all use Jillian's 3-2-1 Interval system which mix cardio, strength and abdominal exercises for more efficient weight loss.

Each workout contains a warm-up, 3 circuits, each circuit with 3 minutes of strength, 2 minutes of cardio, and 1 minute of abs, and finally a 2 minutes cool down.
Equipment needed for the workout are hand weights and a mat if exercising on a hard surface.
Each level workout has an advanced workout and a modified workout.
Review:
The workouts themselves are quite good and I felt soreness from the workouts as soon as I started. I liked that I was able to progress from modified through advanced at each level (one workout level per week) and then I have a new workout to challenge me for the next week.
I think it was my fault, but my motivation was lacking for these workouts. The workouts themselves are difficult and I definitely felt them when I actually did them.
Results:
I think that the DVD was helpful and I was able to progress through the workouts. I really enjoyed that fact that there were no repeats in exercises throughout the different levels, which there were in Jillian Michael's 30 Day shred.
I would do this DVD series again as I felt that it was an effective workout.

September 7: Diastasis Recti Update
So.. I had my second official physical therapy appointment yesterday and I am sore! I must be working something correctly.
Karen warned me that my abdominals might be sore today and she was right. 5 minutes on a rocker board is difficult work!
She also gave me some exercises to do at home which are mostly pilates moves that I've done before. Thankfully I have all of the equipment to make the exercises effective, a small ball, a large exercise ball, and a theraband.
I haven't measured my stomach again. I have no allusions that this will be a quick fix. Recovery from pregnancy will take a while.
Just a note: I am not a medical professional and if you are suffering from diastasis recti, I really urge you to see a physical therapist if possible. It is really nice to have someone's guidance for this condition.

August 28: Diastasis Recti Update
I had another physical therapy appointment today. It was very interesting. Apparently I have scar tissue that is inhibiting movement in my abdomen and so I am working on loosening the area so that I can heal.
I find it upsetting that I had to self diagnose myself two times since my labor and my Obgyn did not figure out any of it or even try to really do an in depth postnatal followup after my c-section. I think I even saw her 3 times after the birth and she found nothing. Oh well. Note to self, question the care that you receive because after all, you are the customer right?
Also, I spoke with my physical therapist about strength training which I stopped doing a few months ago now, and she thought that I needed to develop more core strength before resuming.

August 20th: Diastasis Recti Update
So, I did go see a PT on Friday and she pretty much confirmed my self diagnosis of diastasis recti and recommended 5 weeks of PT. She gave me some exercises to start with and also recommended a back class.
I really hope this all helps. I have been doing the exercise whenever I think of it. standing, sitting, lying down. It's an transverse abdominal hold with a pelvic floor hold. I'll see her in a week.

Ok.. Back to working out. I was able to get an early nap in so that I am awake and refreshened for my workout.
Today's task: A Workout
Zumba Fitness for Wii: 45 min. Intermediate Workout #1
I was feeling ambitious and tried the 45 minute Intermediate workout #1. Wow! I was feeling it and wondering when it would end.
It might have been nice to have 30 minute workouts on this game. The jump from 20 minutes to 45 minutes is huge! I did it anyways, but I can't say that I was doing that well. I felt the cardio working.
I have to say that I am getting a bit bored with the combinations already in the game. They are repeated over and over again in each workout. I really wish there was another cool down song. The same song to cool down to on each of the 6 different workouts that I have done.

No time to workout today. Family coming over for dinner and the house needs picking up.
Today's task: No workout
I would not call this a rest day. I was busy all day working on getting the house ready to host our guests and dinner plus dessert ready. I got it done and dinner and dessert was delicious.

Exhausted again... I could not fall asleep last night and was up for 3 hours for no good reason. My mind was racing on all the things I need to get done this week.

A beautiful day today with fun at the park with my husband and son.
Today's task: A Workout
Zumba Fitness for Wii: 20 min. Intermediate workout #1
For Day 8 of Zumba Fitness for Wii, I did the 20 minute Intermediate workout #1.
This workout was a definite increase in difficulty. I enjoyed this workout and didn't stumble too much over my feet.

Note: Since I just jump into this 30 day challenge feet first, I didn't really investigate the game too much before I started. I am pleasantly surprised how much I like this game. I do like Zumba classes I've taken at the gym before and the convenience of having the workouts at home is wonderful. With $10 to $15 a class for Zumba, I figure I am really getting my money's worth out of this game.
The game has 3 levels of preset workouts.
Below is the breakdown of the number of workouts per level and time.
Beginner 20 minute workouts: 2

For Day 3 of Zumba Fitness for Wii, I started the 20 minute Beginner workout #2, but did not finish. :( It was interrupted and I was unable to finish.

For Day 1 of Zumba Fitness for Wii, I did the 20 minute Beginner workout.
I really had fun doing the workout and I was breathing kind of hard. Can this really be the beginner workout? :)

It has been a while and I am ready to get back into the 30 day challenges. I purchased the Zumba Fitness game for the Wii. I was looking to get more cardio into my life.
In the past, I have taken Zumba exercise classes at local gyms in my town, but since having a baby, I have had little time to go to the gym. I really enjoyed the classes and hoped that the Zumba Fitness game would get me back.

Get more cardio in my life and increase cardiovascular capacity. I would like to keep my workouts varied and utilize varied options to create workouts. I am considering also trying to get an extra zumba belt so I can do zumba dance party with friends to mix it up.
The Workout Plan:
I want to work out at least 4 times a week. There are 3 levels of difficulty and I would like to increase the difficulty as I become more accustomed to the workouts.

July 1st
I was able to modify Bob Harper's Inside Out Method Body Rev Cardio Conditioning workout so that I don't make my diastasis recti (DR) worse. I tried to make it through the 1 hour workout and found it to be too repetitive so I stopped. It did seem like I was actually working my muscles and it was fairly good cardio workout.
I have been so lax in getting back to my workout and feeling extremely out of balance, more than normal. The house is getting out of control and I feel as though I am not getting anything done. I need to get back to the challenges so that I take care of myself.

Where have I been?
Well, you might be wondering where I have been the last few weeks. I am still here. I have been vigorously cleaning the entire house a spring cleaning of sorts. It has kept me very busy. I am also still trying to decide what to do exactly about my diastasis recti (DR). There are a few options out there.
There is the Tupler Technique from Julie Tupler. It claims it is the only research based technique that is proven to close a DR. The research is from the Columbia University and this technique has been around for 20 years. The website has a package with a DVD, a splint, and a guidebook.The package is $80. This is probably the one I should get but I looked around elsewhere to see other options.
There is the MuTu program from Wendy Powell. She has a few options which include: 12 week program which is everything you need for the post baby body you want. Weight loss + intensive workouts to shape, tone and strengthen and core and pelvic floor restoration ($137) or MuTu Focus which is only the core and pelvic floor restoration part. She doesn't use a splint to help close the DR ($87). Each program includes online support as well.

Diastasis Recti
So, I have figured out, i.e. self diagnosed myself that I have diastasis recti. I watched a video which shows how you can tell if you have it. I have been pretty bummed out about it and I have been researching online to see what I can do to improve the condition.
For those who don't know about this condition, this is what I found out from wikipedia:
Diastasis recti (also known as abdominal separation) is a disorder defined as a separation of therectus abdominis muscle into right and left halves.[1] Normally, the two sides of the muscle are joined at the linea alba at the body midline. It is essentially a cosmetic condition, with no associated morbidity or mortality.[2]
So I guess I have my list of exercises to do to improve my condition. We will see whether it will improve it. I was bummed that my doctor didn't find this out and that when I messaged her about it, she actually told me to do crunches, which if you read anywhere about this subject is what you are not supposed to do. I might be in the market for a new Obgyn.

- In pregnant or postpartum women, the defect is caused by the stretching of the rectus abdominis by the growing uterus. It is more common in multiparous women due to repeated episodes of stretching. When the defect occurs during pregnancy, the uterus can sometimes be seen bulging through the abdominal wall beneath the skin.[1]
- Women are more susceptible to develop diastasis recti when over the age of 35, high birth weight of child, multiple birth pregnancy, and multiple pregnancies. Additional causes can be attributed to excessive abdominal exercises during the first trimester of pregnancy.[4]
The following exercises have been shown to reduce the distasis recti separation[8]
- Core contraction - In a seated position, place both hands on abdominal muscles. Take small controlled breaths. Slowly contract the abdominal muscles, pulling them straight back towards the spine. Hold the contraction for 30 seconds, while maintaining the controlled breathing. Complete 10 repetitions.[8]
- Seated squeeze - Again in a seated position, place one hand above the belly button, and the other below the belly button. With controlled breaths, with a mid-way starting point, pull the abdominals back toward the spine, hold for 2 seconds and return to the mid-way point. Complete 100 repetitions. [8]
- Head lift - In a lying down position, knees bent at 90° angle, feet flat, slowly lift the head, chin toward your chest, (concentrate on isolation of the abdominals to prevent hip-flexors from being engaged)[6], slowly contract abdominals toward floor, hold for two seconds, lower head to starting position for 2 seconds. Complete 10 repetitions.[8]
- Upright push-up - A standup pushup against the wall, with feet together arms-length away from wall, place hands flat against the wall, contract abdominal muscles toward spine, lean body towards wall, with elbows bent downward close to body, pull abdominal muscles in further, with controlled breathing. Release muscles as you push back to starting position. Complete 20 repetitions.[8]
- Squat against the wall - Also known as a seated squat, stand with back against the wall, feet out in front of body, slowly lower body to a seated position so knees are bent at a 90° angle, contracting abs toward spine as you raise body back to standing position. Optionally, this exercise can also be done using an exercise ball placed against the wall and your lower back. Complete 20 Repetitions.[8]
- Squat with squeeze - A variation to the "Squat against the wall" is to place a small resistance ball between the knees, and squeeze the ball as you lower your body to the seated position. Complete 20 repetitions.[8]
It is also noted that incorrect exercises, including crunches can actually increase the distasis recti separation. All corrective exercises should be in the form of pulling in of the abdominal muscles rather than a pushing of them outwards. Consultation of a professional physiotherapist is recommended for correct exercise routines.[8]
In addition to the above exercises, the Touro College study concluded the "quadruped" position yielded the most effective results. A quadruped position is defined as "a human whose body weight is supported by both arms as well as both legs".[9] In this position, the subject would start with a flat back, then slowly tilt the head down, and arch the back, contracting the abdominal muscles towards the spine, holding this position for 5 seconds, then releasing back to starting position. Complete 2 sets of 10 repetitions.[6]So I guess I have my list of exercises to do to improve my condition. We will see whether it will improve it. I forgot to mention...
I just started trying out Bob Harper's Inside Out Method Body Rev Cardio Conditioning. There are 2 workouts on this DVD and I really feel the need to get more cardio in my life.
For both workouts, I really liked the count down timer so you know exactly how long the workout is and where you are in relation to the end.
The short workout is focused on the Butt and Balance. I enjoyed it and thought it was a nice change for my workout.
The longer workout is definitely cardio. I was only able to do about half of it before my little one woke up. I will definitely do this when I have more time.
I having been working on major spring cleaning and working out and taking time for myself has unfortunately taken a back seat. I am not feeling so good because I am not taking care of myself. I am tired and I am eating pretty poorly. :(

Update
It's been a while since my last post and I thought I would update you on what is happening.
I ended my last 30 day challenge Ripped in 30 with Jillian failing quite miserably. I did one more workout this past Monday and then that was it. The week has been hectic for sure.
My little one turned one on Tuesday and I was kind of disappointed that my body is not back to where it was before. My abdomen is still protruding. Although I can't say that I am surprised considering my lack of exercise regularity.
I started a Women's Health 30 day ab challenge on June 5th, in hopes of changing my abs. Thanks to a link sent to me from my sister in law. I did a few days, but I really have kind of felt that I might have a problem that happens to some pregnant women which is diastasis recti, the separation of the abdominal muscles. I found a video showing the test of how to tell if you do have this condition and yes, yes I do. I didn't want to make the problem worse, so I have been trying to do exercises to make it better. I have no formal 30 day challenge for exercise at the moment, so I thought I might try to do another lifestyle challenge.
I have had this book Real Happiness for a while in my To Read pile and I thought I might take this opportunity to start on this book and perhaps find myself happier in this 28 day program. Wish me luck.

Well.. I really felt that I needed to get moving somehow. I decided to try this week's workout.
Today's task: A Workout

Since I can not raise my left arm above my shoulder without it hurting, I modified some of the moves, but I kept moving. This was kind of a new thing that I never had done before. Usually I give up and say that I can't do it. I did that for a minute and then thought, hey I can still move and get my cardio so I did other moves during the one I just couldn't do. My arm was killing me at the end though and I just could not hold the plank position for the length at the end.

Review of Fitness Magazine's Beach Body Bootcamp
Fitness Magazine's Beach Body Bootcamp is a 30 day workout program with a toning workout and options for your cardio for each week. The toning workout should be done three times a week on nonconsecutive days and the cardio can be done on the same day as the toning workout or in between.
The article claims that a person that follows the workouts and eats that food they recommend that they will loose 10 pounds this month. As I said in my Looking ahead post about this 30 day challenge, I am not really looking to loose 10 pounds in a month especially since I am still nursing my little one. I still need the calories. So with that in mind, here is my review.
The equipment needed for the allover sculpting workout is a resistance band.
The cardio workouts are best done if you have a gym membership or some other access to a treadmill or elliptical.
Not so good this month.... Better next month?

The article claims that a person that follows the workouts and eats that food they recommend that they will loose 10 pounds this month. As I said in my Looking ahead post about this 30 day challenge, I am not really looking to loose 10 pounds in a month especially since I am still nursing my little one. I still need the calories. So with that in mind, here is my review.
The equipment needed for the allover sculpting workout is a resistance band.
The cardio workouts are best done if you have a gym membership or some other access to a treadmill or elliptical.
Review:
I can't in good conscience give a full review of this workout and diet plan since I didn't follow the workouts to a tee and I did not follow the diet plan.
With that in mind, I have to say that I found the allover workout easy to do and it was nice to have a portable workout, since a resistance band is small enough to take everywhere with you.
The cardio workouts were aimed more at people with access to a treadmill or elliptical, which I was not able to utilize. So I ended up trying to make up my workouts as I went. It was not so successful. I did find the music links very helpful in keeping track of where I was in my cardio workout and I didn't have to think about what intensity I should be working at. Well done Fitness magazine. Thanks for making a very helpful podcast.

Results:
The results, well, I can't really say that I saw much. I found myself getting bored with the workouts through the month and kind of slacked off. I think maybe I needed more of a challenge after my 42 challenge with the Butt Bible DVD.

I am still upset with myself that I am injured and wish that my arm healed faster. :(
Today's task: Recovery
I was not able to do the recommended number of workouts. I am disappointed.
I figured out what exactly injured my arm. It was one move in the third circuit. I just have to remember how to push myself next time without injuring myself.

Jillian Michael's Ripped in 30 Week 3 Workout
For Day 18 of Ripped in 30, I did the Week 3 workout.
Equipment needed: one set of hand weights (light) I've been using a set of 5 lb. weights
I find Jillian motivates me in these workouts, even when I don't really feel like working out, but sometimes she says annoying things. She continues to say that the workout is 20 minutes.. Jillian Michael's Ripped in 30 Week 3 Workout
For Day 16 of Ripped in 30, I did the Week 3 workout for the second time.
Equipment needed: one set of hand weights (light) I've been using a set of 5 lb. weights
I think this workout is more difficult than the previous ones before and that's a good thing. I haven't become too bored doing any one workout which was something I had a problem with Jillian's 30 day shred. So.. so far I am happy about it.
Also of note, Jillian mentioned that no exercise would be repeated through the series of workouts and she has stayed true to her word. I appreciate this very much.

For Day 11 of Ripped in 30, I did the Week 2 workout.
Equipment needed: one set of hand weights (light)
I forgot to mention that in this workout, Jillian does one of my pet peeves. She starts and ends exercises on one side, meaning if you follow her, you will be lopsided, because you work one side more than the other.
Also, Jillian forgot to switch up the High Low Jab Cross combination to the other side, so you end up doing the combination with the right foot forward both times.

My neck is a bit sore today. I wonder if it is because of the "Good Mornings" with the weight behind my neck.
Today's task: A Workout

I am getting more comfortable with the moves. It feels good to get back into the swing of things.

Jillian Michael's Ripped in 30 Week 1
So, for this DVD, each week Jillian recommends 5 to 6 workouts per week.
Equipment needed: one set of hand weights (light)
It feels good to get back in the groove.
Actual time of the supposed 24 minute workout was 34 minutes (with all the transitions between moves and segments.) There was 3 minutes of talking in the beginning of this workout.

Ok. Day 1 of Ripped in 30. Let's see if I can keep up with this challenge.
Today's task: A Workout
Jillian Michael's Ripped in 30 Week 1
So Day 1 of Ripped in 30 is Week 1 workout.
Equipment needed: one set of hand weights (light)
The workout starts out with a brief warm up and then a few circuits of Jillian's 3-2-1 program. 3 minutes of strength, 2 minutes of cardio and 1 minute of abs.
Actual time of the supposed 24 minute workout was 37 minutes (with all the transitions between moves and segments.) Oh Jillian, another DVD that has workouts labelled 24 minutes and actual time is way overblown.
The workout was good. I felt good after the workout. I thought it was interesting that the modified version and the advanced version were not too different.

Looking Ahead: Jillian Michaels Ripped in 30 Start Date May 6th
It is coming towards the end of my last challenge. I have certainly not done too well on this last challenge. It has made me really think about what I need to stay motivated to exercise and be healthy. I was doing well with the DVDs. I suppose that means that I need someone urging me on even if it is a video.
So.. My next challenge is Jillian Michael's Ripped in 30 DVD. I purchased this DVD a few months ago and have not even taken off the plastic until today. I have to say. I do kind of miss Jillian and her commands on the moves to do. She's "America's toughest Trainer." At least that is what the back of the DVD says.

I am out of my exercise routine again. But I am hoping to get back into it with the next challenge.
Today's task: Toning Day
Day 29 of the Beach Body Bootcamp program is a toning day.
I didn't do the toning workout today. I felt that I need more cardio and I had to get things going in my garden. 30 minutes of cardio with the motiontraxx mix and 1 1/2 hours digging in the garden.
